Best AI Book Writing Software in 2026: 6 Tools Compared
There is no single best AI book writing tool, because they do different jobs. Here is how Anthra, Sudowrite, Novelcrafter, Squibler, Inkfluence AI and ChatGPT compare, and who should choose each.

The best AI book writing software depends on what you want it to do. Sudowrite and Novelcrafter suit authors who want to write the prose themselves with AI beside them. Squibler and Inkfluence AI suit people who want a fast draft from a concept. ChatGPT is the flexible generalist. Anthra, which we make, suits people who want an agent to carry a book through to a finished ebook, audiobook and paperback.
You should know up front that this is our own comparison, so weigh it accordingly. To keep it fair, competitor details come only from each company's own website and pricing pages, checked in October 2026, and we say plainly where another tool is the better pick. Prices change, so check the sources at the end before you decide.
How Do the Main AI Book Writing Tools Compare?
- Sudowrite: a fiction drafting partner. Best for novelists who want to write the book themselves. From $10 a month.
- Novelcrafter: a writing workspace with a strong Codex and bring-your-own AI. Best for control over the model and the prose. From $4 a month, plus your AI provider's charges.
- Squibler: full-length draft generation for books and screenplays. Best for a fast first draft. Free tier, then $192 or $588 a year.
- Inkfluence AI: a subscription book generator with chapter credit packs. Free plan, then $9.99 or $19.99 a month.
- ChatGPT: a general assistant. Best for flexible help around the book. Free, then $8 to $100+ a month.
- Anthra: an AI agent that takes a book from idea to ebook, audiobook and print. Pay-as-you-go credits, no subscription.
Which Tool Is Best for Writing Fiction Yourself?
Sudowrite is the focused choice if you want to write the book yourself with an AI partner at your elbow. It offers in-line tools such as Write, Describe and Expand, a fiction-trained model called Muse, and more than 1,000 community plugins. Hobby & Student is $10 a month, Professional $22 and Max $44. It doesn't offer audiobook narration on its site.
Novelcrafter is the choice if you want control. It is a writing workspace with a strong Codex, flexible planning views and team sharing, and you bring your own AI, including local models. Plans run from $4 a month (Scribe, with no AI features) to $20 (Specialist), plus whatever your AI provider charges.
Which Tool Is Best for a Fast Full Draft?
Squibler generates a full-length, chapter-and-scene draft from your concept, and does the same for screenplays, which Anthra does not. It can also make images and short video clips from highlighted passages. Its free tier includes 1,000 AI credits a month, Plus is $192 a year and Pro is $588 a year with unlimited AI credits, which may work out cheaper if you generate many books a year. Audiobook narration isn't offered.
Inkfluence AI also covers generation, with a free plan that needs no credit card. Creator is $9.99 a month and Premium is $19.99 a month with unlimited chapters, and one-time chapter credit packs start at $9.99 for 15.
Is ChatGPT Good Enough to Write a Book?
ChatGPT is the most flexible tool here. It handles research, marketing copy, query letters and anything else around the book, and its free and $8 Go plans make it cheap to try. The trade-off is that it is a general assistant rather than a book tool, so you manage the plan, the continuity and the final files yourself. For a short project that may be all you need. For a long book, keeping track of the story across many chapters becomes your job.
Which Tool Takes a Book All the Way to Publication?
This is the gap Anthra is built for. Its AI agent interviews you about the idea, builds a beat sheet and chapter outline, writes chapters, checks them against character, world and continuity bibles, designs front, back and spine covers, illustrates in one consistent style and narrates with per-character voices. It exports EPUB, PDF, DOCX and M4B audiobooks, and print-ready paperback files. Anything that spends credits or publishes waits for your approval.
There is no subscription. You buy credit packs that never expire and spend them per step: about 6 credits for a chapter, 3 for an illustration and 4 to narrate about 1,000 characters. Anthra is also available to other agents, so you can drive it from Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor over MCP.
It isn't the right pick for everyone. It has no fiction-specific model of its own and no plugin marketplace, and it doesn't write screenplays. If you enjoy drafting every sentence, a drafting partner will suit you better.
"Pick the tool for the job you want done: writing with you, writing for you, or finishing the book."
