A writer’s workbench where you bring your own AI, and an agent that takes a book from idea to audiobook and print.
Choose Novelcrafter if you want to write the novel yourself in a well-organised workspace: a Codex wiki for characters and lore, Grid, Matrix and Outline planning views, custom prompts, and the freedom to plug in the AI model of your choice, including local models. It also supports sharing with editors and writing teams.
Choose Anthra if you want an AI agent to carry the whole book (planning, drafting, continuity checks, cover and chapter art, a narrated audiobook, EPUB/PDF/DOCX and a print-ready paperback), asking for your approval before costly steps, with AI included rather than set up yourself. Choose it too if you want to run the work from Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor over MCP.

Control. Novelcrafter lets you connect the AI platform you prefer (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, OpenRouter’s 300+ models) or run models on your own machine with LM Studio or Ollama, and its custom prompts, prompt components and preview show exactly what the model receives. Its planning views are flexible, and its Specialist plan adds Teams for writing groups. Anthra picks and pays for the models for you, so you can’t swap in your own or run one locally.
Novelcrafter is built around writing by hand with AI on call. Its Codex is a wiki of characters, locations and lore with tags, relations, aliases, mentions and progressions. The editor has focus mode, highlighting, split panels and a dyslexia-friendly font, and AI tools handle text replacement, scene summaries, generation from scene beats and character detection. Workshop chat (Artisan and up) lets you talk through a scene with the context you choose.
Anthra’s agent interviews you about the premise, builds a beat sheet and chapter outline for you to approve, then drafts chapters while checking against character, world and continuity bibles. A critique panel, a test-reader panel and continuity tools catch timeline slips, character drift and dangling threads, and edits land as track-changes suggestions. Every chapter opens in a full editor too, so you can still write by hand.
Novelcrafter lets you add cover artwork and codex thumbnails; its site does not list image generation. Anthra builds front, back and spine cover panels, composes a print-ready wraparound spread, and generates chapter illustrations and character portraits in one locked style, with character descriptions locked so faces stay consistent.
Novelcrafter’s site does not list audiobook narration. Anthra narrates from the same manuscript: cast a narrator per character from 100+ ElevenLabs voices, layer ambience and intro stings, and export chapter-by-chapter M4B or MP3 files.
Novelcrafter exports Word .docx and Markdown, with options to choose acts, chapters and scenes, prose or summaries, and to include the codex, chats or snippets. Its help docs say you cannot yet format a novel for publication inside Novelcrafter (it is on the roadmap) and recommend exporting to a tool such as Atticus, Vellum or Scrivener.
Anthra exports EPUB, PDF and DOCX for digital, M4B / MP3 for audio, and sends paperbacks to Lulu print-on-demand, calculating spine width and bleed. You can also publish a public reading page on Anthra’s Discover storefront, gate downloads behind email capture or payment, and embed a reader on your own site.
Novelcrafter connects outward to AI providers, but we found no public API or MCP server on its site.
Anthra is agent-first. The in-app agent uses 250+ tools and stops for an Approve / Deny prompt before publishing, narration, image generation, deletion and print orders. The same toolkit is exposed over an MCP server: Claude.ai and ChatGPT connect over OAuth, and Cursor, Claude Code and Claude Desktop connect with a personal API key, scoped by permission and book with an optional monthly credit cap. A REST API with an OpenAPI schema rounds it out.
As of October 2026, Novelcrafter has four monthly plans: Scribe at $4 (no AI features), Hobbyist at $8 (bring-your-own-key AI), Artisan at $14 (adds Workshop chat) and Specialist at $20 (adds collaborative writing and Teams). Annual billing gives two months off. There is a 21-day free trial with no card required and no free plan. AI usage is paid separately to the provider you connect.
Anthra has no subscription and no separate AI bill. You buy credit packs and spend them per step: about 5 credits for a chapter, 2 for an outline and 4 for an illustration. Credits never expire. New accounts get welcome credits with no card required, and paid packs include a commercial license. See Anthra pricing.
For some writers. Novelcrafter is a writing environment for people who want to write the novel themselves, with a strong Codex, flexible planning views and full control over which AI model they use and what it sees. Anthra suits writers who want an agent to plan, draft, illustrate, narrate and publish the book with them, without setting up their own AI provider.
As of October 2026, Novelcrafter’s AI features (from the Hobbyist plan up) work by connecting your own AI provider, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or OpenRouter, or a local model through LM Studio or Ollama. You pay that provider for usage on top of the subscription. Anthra’s AI is built in and billed in credits, so there is no key to set up.
They charge differently. As of October 2026, Novelcrafter costs $4 a month (Scribe, no AI), $8 (Hobbyist), $14 (Artisan) or $20 (Specialist), with two months off when billed annually, plus whatever your AI provider charges. Anthra has no subscription: credit packs never expire and a chapter costs about 5 credits. If you write most of the prose yourself and use AI lightly, Novelcrafter with your own key can be very cheap.
Yes. Novelcrafter exports Word .docx, and Anthra imports DOCX (as well as DOC, EPUB, MOBI and PDF), chapterizes the manuscript and builds a character and world bible from it. From there you can illustrate, narrate and publish.
Novelcrafter lets you choose Claude, GPT and other models as the AI inside its editor. Anthra works the other way round too: it runs an MCP server, so you can add it as a custom connector in Claude.ai or ChatGPT over OAuth, or connect Cursor and Claude Code with a scoped API key. We found no public API or MCP server on Novelcrafter’s site.
