How Much Does It Cost to Make an Audiobook in 2026?

A professionally narrated audiobook usually runs $200 to $400 per finished hour, or a share of your royalties. Here is how to estimate your book's length and cost, and where AI narration fits.

A professionally narrated audiobook typically costs around $200 to $400 per finished hour of audio, and a finished hour is roughly 9,300 words. That puts a 60,000-word novel at about six and a half hours, or roughly $1,300 to $2,600 for narration and production. You can avoid the upfront cost by splitting royalties with a narrator instead, or by using AI narration, which costs far less but is still a small part of what listeners buy.

Here is how those numbers are worked out, the main ways to pay for production, and how to decide which one fits your book.

How Long Will Your Audiobook Be?

Audiobook pricing is quoted per finished hour (PFH), which means an hour of final, edited audio, not an hour in the recording booth. ACX, Amazon's audiobook marketplace, estimates about 9,300 words per finished hour. Divide your word count by 9,300 to get a working estimate:

  • A 25,000-word novella: about 2.7 hours.
  • A 60,000-word novel: about 6.5 hours.
  • A 90,000-word novel: about 9.7 hours.
  • A 120,000-word epic: about 12.9 hours.

What Does a Human Narrator Cost?

ACX's own guidance puts a rough industry standard at about $200 PFH for narration plus another $200 PFH for post-production, which covers editing, quality control, mixing and mastering. Many narrators quote a single all-in rate, and rates vary a great deal with experience. Producing one finished hour takes roughly four hours of work, which is why the rates are what they are.

Using those figures, a 60,000-word novel at an all-in $300 PFH comes to about $1,950. At $400 PFH it's about $2,600. Add cover art sized for audio platforms and any music or sound design you want.

"A finished hour is about 9,300 words, and that one number drives most of the cost."

Can You Pay With Royalties Instead?

ACX offers a royalty share option. You pay nothing upfront, and the narrator or producer receives half of your royalties instead. The trade-off is that royalty share requires exclusive distribution through ACX, which places the book on Audible, Amazon and Apple Books, and the split runs for years. It's a good fit when cash is tight and you expect steady sales, and a poor one if you want the audiobook in libraries and on other stores.

Is the Audiobook Market Worth It?

The market is large and still growing. The Audio Publishers Association reports U.S. audiobook sales of $2.43 billion in 2025, up 9% on the year before, and its consumer survey found that 58% of American adults, an estimated 157 million people, have listened to an audiobook. General fiction is the biggest genre, at 27% of revenue.

Where Does AI Narration Fit?

AI narration removes most of the cost and lets you produce audio in hours instead of weeks. It's still a niche in sales, though: AI-voiced titles were 0.03% of U.S. audiobook revenue in 2025, and only 16% of listeners said they had tried one. Retailers also treat it differently. ACX requires audiobooks to be narrated by a human unless otherwise authorized, while Amazon has run a separate Virtual Voice program for KDP ebooks.

A sensible approach for many independent authors is to use AI narration to test demand and reach readers who already have your ebook, then invest in a human narrator for the titles that sell. AI narration also works well for formats where a performance matters less, such as nonfiction, study guides and children's read-alongs.
