Audiobooks for Self-Published Authors: Narration, Distribution and Rights
Your options for producing an audiobook, from hiring a narrator to digital and AI voices, where you can distribute each kind, what ACX pays, and the disclosure rules for AI narration.
Key takeaways
- Audiobook length drives cost: at about 9,300 words per finished hour, a 60,000-word novel runs about six and a half hours.
- ACX pays 50% for exclusive and 30% for non-exclusive distribution under its new royalty model, as of November 2026.
- ACX requires human narration unless otherwise authorized, so AI-narrated audiobooks need a platform that accepts them.
- Make sure you hold your audio rights, and always be honest with listeners and platforms about how a book was narrated.
Audiobooks are a large and growing market, and many listeners only buy audio. For a self-published author, they can be a second income stream from a book you’ve already written. The decisions are how to produce it, where to sell it and how to handle the rules, especially around AI narration. Figures here are as of November 2026.
Do You Own the Audio Rights to Your Book?
If you self-published and never signed a contract granting audio rights to anyone, you almost certainly own them. If you have a traditional or hybrid publishing contract, check it: audio rights are often included. Also make sure you can license everything in the book for audio, such as quoted song lyrics or poems, which may need separate permission.
