Anthra vs Sudowrite.

Two different tools for writing a book with AI: a fiction drafting partner, and an agent that takes a book from idea to audiobook and print.

The short answer

Choose Sudowrite if you are a fiction writer who wants to write the book yourself with an AI partner at your elbow: suggestions for the next 300 words in your voice, richer description, scene expansion, rewrites, brainstorming, a fiction-trained model (Muse) and a large plugin library. It is a focused, mature drafting tool for novelists.

Choose Anthra if you want an AI agent to carry the whole book (planning, drafting, continuity checks, cover and chapter art, a narrated audiobook, EPUB/PDF/DOCX and a print-ready paperback), asking for your approval before costly steps. Choose it too if you want to run the work from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or your own agent over MCP, or you prefer credits that never expire to a subscription.

As of October 2026. Sudowrite details come from Sudowrite’s own website and docs (linked below) and may have changed since.

Writing

Writing is where Sudowrite is strongest. Its Story Bible walks you from idea to outline to chapter beats to thousands of words of prose in your style. While you draft, Write reads your characters, tone and plot arc and offers several options for the next 300 words; Describe, Expand and Rewrite work on the passage in front of you; Canvas and Brainstorm help with plot twists, character secrets, names and titles; and Feedback suggests areas to improve. Sudowrite also offers Muse, its own model built for fiction, alongside 30+ other models, plus style matching and series continuity. Its Professional and Max plans add developmental edits, line edits and beta reads.

Anthra covers similar ground with a different shape. Its agent interviews you about the premise, builds a beat sheet and chapter outline for you to approve, then drafts chapters while checking against character, world and continuity bibles. A specialist critique panel, a test-reader panel and continuity tools catch timeline slips, character drift and dangling threads, and edits land as track-changes suggestions. Every chapter also opens in a full editor, so you can write by hand. If your priority is a fiction-tuned model and line-by-line drafting help, Sudowrite has the edge.

Illustration and covers

Sudowrite’s Visualize generates art from your descriptions for character sheets and worldbuilding, which helps you picture your cast and setting. It is not presented as a cover or book-illustration tool.

Anthra treats art as part of the finished book. It builds front, back and spine cover panels and composes a print-ready wraparound spread. It also generates chapter illustrations and character portraits in one locked style, with character descriptions locked so faces stay consistent.

Narration and audiobooks

Sudowrite’s site does not list audiobook narration. Anthra narrates from the same manuscript: cast a narrator per character from a library of lifelike voices, layer ambience and intro stings, and export chapter-by-chapter M4B or MP3 files.

Export and publishing

Sudowrite exports a single document as .docx, the whole project as one .docx, the project as a .zip bundle, and Story Bible outlines, characters and worldbuilding as .csv files. That suits taking the manuscript to an editor, agent or separate formatting tool.

Anthra exports EPUB, PDF and DOCX for digital, M4B / MP3 for audio, and sends paperbacks to Lulu print-on-demand, calculating spine width and bleed. You can also publish a public reading page on Anthra’s Discover storefront, gate downloads behind email capture or payment, and embed a reader on your own site.

Agent, MCP and API access

Sudowrite offers an in-app Chat built with novelists in mind. We found no public API or MCP server in Sudowrite’s documentation.

Anthra is agent-first. The in-app agent uses 250+ tools and stops for an Approve / Deny prompt before publishing, narration, image generation, deletion and print orders. The same toolkit is exposed over an MCP server: Claude.ai and ChatGPT connect over OAuth, and Cursor, Claude Code and Claude Desktop connect with a personal API key. Keys are scoped (read, write, generation, publishing) and can be limited to specific books with a monthly credit cap. A REST API with an OpenAPI schema and durable full-book background jobs with webhooks round it out.

Pricing model

Sudowrite is a subscription with a free trial (no credit card needed). Hobby & Student is $10 a month with 225,000 credits, Professional is $22 a month, and Max is $44 a month with 2,000,000 credits that roll over for 12 months. Yearly billing is advertised at up to 50% off. If you cancel, you keep your projects but lose the AI features.

Anthra has no subscription. You buy credit packs and spend them per step: about 5 credits for a chapter, 3 for research and an outline, and 4 for an illustration. Credits never expire. New accounts get welcome credits with no card required, and paid packs include a commercial license. See Anthra pricing.

FAQ

Is Anthra a good Sudowrite alternative?

It depends on what you use Sudowrite for. If you mostly want in-line help while you draft fiction yourself, Sudowrite is purpose-built for that and is likely the better fit. If you want an AI agent that plans, writes, illustrates, narrates and publishes the whole book, or you want to drive book creation from Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor over MCP, Anthra covers steps Sudowrite does not advertise.

Can Sudowrite make an audiobook?

Sudowrite’s home page and pricing page do not list audiobook narration as of October 2026. Anthra narrates from the same manuscript, with a narrator per character, and exports M4B and MP3 files.

Which is cheaper, Sudowrite or Anthra?

They charge differently. Sudowrite is a subscription: plans start at $10 a month, with Professional at $22 and Max at $44, each with a monthly credit allowance. Anthra sells credit packs with no subscription; credits never expire, and a chapter costs about 5 credits. Light or occasional writers may prefer packs; daily drafters may prefer a predictable monthly plan.

Can I export from Sudowrite into Anthra?

Sudowrite exports .docx files, and Anthra imports DOCX (as well as DOC, EPUB, MOBI and PDF), chapterizes the manuscript and builds a character and world bible from it. From there you can illustrate, narrate and publish.

Does either tool work with Claude or ChatGPT?

Anthra runs an MCP server: add it as a custom connector in Claude.ai or ChatGPT over OAuth, or connect Cursor and Claude Code with a scoped API key. We found no public API or MCP server in Sudowrite’s documentation.
