Six tools for making children’s books, plus Anthra: what each is for, what it costs, and who should pick it.
No tool leads across the board, and we found no independent ranking. Most “best AI children’s book” lists are written by vendors ranking themselves first, so start from what you’re making.
Choose a specialist if you want one job done well: Neolemon for character art you lay out yourself, Childbook.ai or ReadKidz for generating many books on a subscription, Gemini Storybook for a short story, Book Creator for a classroom.
Choose Anthra if you want an AI agent to plan, write, illustrate and narrate the book with you, asking for your approval before costly steps, then export EPUB, PDF and DOCX or order a Lulu print-on-demand paperback, with credits instead of a subscription. Picture books are composed page by page on square pages, with a fixed-layout EPUB and a print PDF, and a checklist says what stops one printing.
As of November 2026, unless a date is given. Competitor details come from each company’s own website (linked below), describe features as that company does, and may have changed since.

| Anthra | Best forA book that needs writing, art, narration and print in one place | PricePay-as-you-go credits that never expire: about 6 for a chapter (9 on long and novel-length books), 3 for an illustration. Not a guarantee of an exact match | Output and printEPUB, PDF and DOCX; fixed-layout EPUB and print PDF for picture books; print-wrap cover PDF; Lulu print-on-demand paperback, with color interiors at 6×9 and 8.5×11 in, or a square hardcover at 7.5×7.5 or 8.5×8.5 in |
Character art. Neolemon is built around it: its pricing page lists character-consistency editors, photo-to-cartoon avatars and multi-character scenes, and its blog describes Action and Expression editors for new poses and expressions, with fixed character identity kept apart from scene details. If your book stands or falls on its characters and you’re happy to lay out the pages yourself, try Neolemon first.
Picture-book layout and printing. ReadKidz sells a printed hardcover from $39.90 shipped. StoryBee offers paperback and hardcover print on demand in single copies, with about 3 to 5 business days of production. StoryStar says it offers PDF and fixed-layout EPUB, and Inkfluence AI says it makes a square 8.5×8.5 print PDF. Anthra’s picture-book composer is plainer: each square page holds one image and a few lines of text, and its print route is Lulu alone.
Classrooms. Book Creator is built for teachers, with Class View, co-teachers, LMS, Clever and ClassLink connections, SSO and live analytics, priced per teacher rather than per student. Anthra isn’t built for classrooms.
Getting started for nothing. Gemini Storybook and Book Creator’s Starter tier are free, and they may be all you need for a short story at home. Anthra gives new accounts welcome credits, but a finished illustrated book will usually need a paid credit pack.
Many of these tools market consistent characters. We found no independent test of any of them, and there is none of Anthra either. StoryStar’s own page says likeness is “not guaranteed” and offers per-page fixes, which is an honest way to put it.
In Anthra you generate a character portrait and lock it. Anthra then carries that character’s locked details into each later chapter, scene and cover prompt, and sends a portrait it generated to the image model as a reference. That helps, but details can still drift between illustrations, so review every picture, then repair or regenerate what’s off.
Before you commit to any tool, make the same character in three or four different scenes, add a second character to the frame, and compare the results yourself.
Read the plan as well as the price. Childbook.ai lists a commercial license and no watermark on its $99 Business plan. ReadKidz’s free plan is watermarked, and its terms allow commercial use, including Amazon KDP, while saying AI outputs are not exclusive. Neolemon’s Creator plan includes commercial use.
Anthra has no plans. You buy credit packs and spend them per step, credits never expire, and paid packs include a commercial license. Five short chapters with 16 illustrations and three cover panels come to about 90 credits, before rewrites, agent turns or narration. See Anthra pricing.
Anthra’s Lulu print-on-demand catalog has paperbacks and square hardcovers, and it works out the spine width and bleed for the cover. Color paperback interiors are available at 6×9 and 8.5×11 inches, and hardcovers at 7.5×7.5 and 8.5×8.5 inches. You can also download EPUB, PDF and DOCX files and upload them to a store yourself.
Whichever tool you use, KDP requires you to disclose AI-generated text, images or translations, even if you edited them substantially. Check your files in your retailer’s or printer’s own previewer before you publish or order copies.
It depends on the job, and we found no independent ranking. As of November 2026, Neolemon focuses on character art, Childbook.ai and ReadKidz on generating books on a subscription, Gemini Storybook on short 10-page stories, and Book Creator on classrooms. Anthra suits a book that also needs writing help, narration and a print-on-demand paperback.
We can’t say, because we found no independent test of any tool, Anthra included. Vendor scores are vendor-run. Anthra carries a locked character’s details into each illustration prompt and sends generated portraits as references, which helps but guarantees nothing. Test any tool with your own character across several scenes.
From some tools, yes. As of November 2026, ReadKidz sells a hardcover from $39.90 shipped, and StoryBee offers paperback and hardcover print on demand. Anthra’s print route is Lulu print-on-demand, with a paperback or a square hardcover.
Check each tool’s license first. ReadKidz’s terms allow commercial use including Amazon KDP, Neolemon’s Creator plan includes commercial use, and Childbook.ai lists a commercial license on its Business plan. Anthra’s paid credit packs include a commercial license, and you download the files and upload them to KDP yourself. KDP requires you to disclose AI-generated text and images.
No. Anthra has no class rosters or teacher tools. Book Creator is built for classrooms, with Class View, co-teachers, LMS connections and per-teacher pricing.
